Description

Even in transcendence, people are inherently flawed; while we reach for above, paradise is still far from our grasps. We choose to sacrifice a part of ourselves in order to win, to be different.

Joeri took out her left eye; eyes grant us vision and builds our perception of physical things. To transcend, a person must let go of mundane objects and instead understand them for what they really are. By letting go of one eye, she accepts that true transcendence is BLIND, but also retains her other eye, the FLAWS.

Norse mythology- Odin and Mímir's Well:

Odin wanted the wisdom from the Well, and sacrificed his left eye for a drink. The knowledge so burdened him that he was said to have never smiled again.

My friend dug that up for me when she saw this picture, thanks Shelley!

My submission to *shilin's contest, with the theme of "Transcendence" located here: [link]

Featuring the same person, Joeri, from these two pictures:

Prelude: [link]

Wish me luck in this contest! :)

Time: 10+ hours
Tools:
- Scanner and pencil sketch
- GIMP for half the painting
-Photoshop Elements 4.0 for details

New painting style, because I didn't use any lines at all, just blocked in shapes and went with it. I also put all the colors on one layer, like a traditional painting because I am too simple to deal with too many layers. :P

EDIT 4/26/08 Now that the contest is officially over, critique to your hearts' content!

So beautiful.....as soon as I saw this I thought "Whoa that's fantastic!!", the ripple effect on the water....and how the water seems to reach up and grab her are stunning affects.....the shading and folds are seemless.....I must say, this is a marvelous piece....
